Thread-tying Ceremony

An important occasion in Hindu culture is the thread-tying ceremony for boys of higher castes, an event containing several rites and rituals. The boy is usually around the age of 10 in this ceremony, and it marks him as belonging to the specific caste. In the ceremony, several banded threads are tied around the boy’s neck and chest. Then the boy recites a couple of lines from sacred texts. The parents of the boy, family members, friends, and the Brahmin priest attend this ceremony. Like most Hindu ceremonies, the occasion includes gifts and a lavish meal.
